In the port of Rotterdam, for loading electric work boats, we combined our mobile DC fast charger immediately battery buffer from a battery rental company. The result: a fully mobile solution which allowed an electric workboat to charge directly at the quay, without a permanent connection, grid reinforcement or excavation work. Ideal for ports, where grid capacity is often limited and flexibility is essential.

Loading at the quay in the port of Rotterdam, without fixed infrastructure

At ChargeMakers we are regularly asked to collaborate on these kinds of unconventional projects. This time we were approached by a battery rental company with a special request: whether we our mobile 300 kW fast charger could supply for a loading solution at the quay in the port of RotterdamTheir battery buffer was already ready – together we ensured that electric boats can also charge in the harbour, without fixed infrastructure. A new step towards clean harbours.

Why are ports switching to electric sailing?

More and more European ports are saying goodbye to diesel engines. And for good reason:

  • Stricter regulations – from 2030, ships will be required to be able to load at the quayside in many ports (FuelEU Maritime & AFIR).
  • Cleaner air and less noise – electric charging at the quay reduces CO₂, nitrogen and noise pollution. Good for people and the environment.
  • Lower in costs – electric sailing means less maintenance and lower energy costs.
